Germans de Montserrat marks 9 d'Octubre with a morsel for every comarca
The Associació Germans de Montserrat, a cultural association in the town, has published the «33 Mossets» proposal for 9 d’Octubre, the Valencian national day. The infographic condenses into 33 morsels —one per comarca— the geography and the culinary tradition of the Valencian Country (el País Valencià), from the mountain flavours of Els Ports and l’Alt Maestrat to the seafood of the Marina Alta and the Marina Baixa.
The starting point is an idea the initiative itself sums up as follows: «per a conéixer la història i la identitat d’un poble cal seure a la seua taula» — to understand a people’s history and identity you have to sit at their table. The poster divides the 33 comarques into three blocks —those of Castelló, València and Alacant— and assigns each one a morsel made with produce from its territory, from the cheese of Catí or the cecina (cured beef) of l’Alt Maestrat to the red prawn of the Marina Alta or the octopus of the Marina Baixa.
The classics of the market garden and the sea, eaten on a good slice of bread, are there too: the esgarraet of the city of València (roast peppers with salted cod), the all i pebre d’anguila of la Ribera Baixa (an eel stew with garlic and paprika) and the pericana of l’Alcoià and l’Alacantí (a pepper and cod relish).
A morsel for every comarca
- Castelló: cheese from Catí (Els Ports), cecina (l’Alt Maestrat), artichoke from Benicarló (el Baix Maestrat) and orange (la Plana Baixa).
- València: esgarraet (the city of València), all i pebre d’anguila (la Ribera Baixa), orange, fresh cheese and honey (la Ribera Alta) and figatell with honey (la Safor).
- Alacant: red prawn (la Marina Alta), octopus (la Marina Baixa), pericana (l’Alcoià and l’Alacantí) and artichoke and dates (el Baix Vinalopó and el Baix Segura).
In la Ribera Alta, the comarca Montserrat belongs to, the morsel on offer combines orange, fresh cheese and honey. The Associació Germans de Montserrat, a cultural association based at the Plaça de l’Església (the church square), wishes Valencians a happy Diada and a happy day of lovers —the festivity of Sant Donís— and invites readers to answer a question: «Quin és el mos de la teua comarca? I quin afegiries tu per a celebrar el nostre dia?»
