Montserrat’s Tots Sants mass is held at the cemetery on Sunday at 12.30 pm
Montserrat’s municipal cemetery opens on Sunday 1 November, Tots Sants (All Saints’ Day), from 8 am to 8 pm, and the mass for the feast is celebrated at 12.30 pm inside the grounds, according to the notice issued by the town council on Friday 30 October. The parish moves out to the cemetery this time: the service is held among the niches rather than in the church on the Plaça de l’Església (the church square).
Tots Sants is the year’s main day for visiting the dead. Through the morning families come to the graves to clean the headstones, change the flowers —chrysanthemums are the flower of the day— and light a candle. The publicly owned cemetery becomes the meeting point of a day in which memory of those who have gone mixes with the life of those who carry on.
The Church dedicates 1 November to all the saints and 2 November to the faithful departed, although popular custom concentrates the visit to cemeteries on the first day. The council said that in recent weeks cleaning and gardening work has been carried out «with the aim of preparing the grounds» for the feast.
Under the notice, residents who have been to the cemetery in recent days confirmed the result of the maintenance work: «I came to the cemetery today and it was spotless», one woman wrote, while another replied that the grounds are «always kept in good order».
With the mass at midday and the cemetery open until 8 pm, Montserrat closes the morning of Tots Sants among the graves, for another year, with the usual flowers and the silence of those who are no longer here.
