Estellés’s oratorio for Víctor Jara opens the Esmorzar Estellés in Montserrat

Montserrat will host the Esmorzar Estellés (the Estellés breakfast) on Sunday 25 October, a day combining the stage poetry of Vicent Andrés Estellés with an outdoor popular breakfast. The event is organised by Col·lectiu Carcalí, with the collaboration of the Ajuntament de Montserrat, and the breakfast will be served in the carrer Vicent Andrés Estellés (Estellés street).

The programme will open at 9.30 am with a performance of «Oratori per la mort de Víctor Jara» by members of the collective itself. It is one of the three stage oratorios Estellés brought together in Oratori del nostre temps (1978), written under the impact of Pinochet’s coup in Chile and the murder of the singer-songwriter Víctor Jara on 16 September 1973.

At 10.30 am the breakfast follows, with flatbreads («coques») topped with bacon and sardine and oven-roasted peppers cut into strips. There is no strict closing time: the day is expected to run until around 2 pm. Registration costs 10 euros and is arranged through members of the association: the poster offers no online booking and publishes no contact telephone number.

The poster opens with a stanza from «A desalambrar», the song written by the Uruguayan Daniel Viglietti and recorded by Víctor Jara in 1969 for the album «Pongo en tus manos abiertas»: «Yo pregunto a los presentes si no se han puesto a pensar que esta tierra es de nosotros y no del que tenga más». Alongside the Chilean singer, the design also reproduces a portrait of the poet from Burjassot, author of the text that will open the day.

The carrer Vicent Andrés Estellés is one of the town’s streets named after the poet, so the day will unfold with his name as its setting. The event is held by Col·lectiu Carcalí, the group that performs the oratorio and then brings the participants together around the table.
