Anna Moner brings her talk «Freaks: monsters, circus and spectacle» to Montserrat
Montserrat will host the talk «Freaks: monsters, circus and spectacle» on Friday 23 October at 7 pm, a journey through the history of the freak shows that filled European and American circuses between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The talk will take place at the Casa de la Cultura (the town’s cultural centre).
The talk is given by Anna Moner, a writer and visual artist from Vila-real, author of works such as «Gabinet de curiositats» and presenter of the programme of the same name on À Punt. Her work, devoted to the world of cabinets of curiosities and ways of displaying the extraordinary, is closely tied to the universe of the freak shows.
The title echoes Tod Browning’s film «Freaks» (1932), released in Spain as «La parada de los monstruos», which brought real performers from the freak shows to the screen and is read today as a reflection on how society views difference. The event is organised by Ajuntament de Montserrat within the Montserrat Suma Cultura cultural programme, with the collaboration of the Diputació de València through its Servei d’Assistència i Recursos Culturals (SARC).
